Major-sector productivity and cost indexes describe aggregate U.S. production, hours, and labor compensation. They do not measure market concentration, markups, profits, employer power, bargaining power, innovation, product quality, a legal antitrust market, or the competitive cause of a change.
All measures are seasonally adjusted BLS indexes with 2017=100, but sector boundaries and output concepts still differ. Manufacturing uses sectoral output while business, nonfarm business, and nonfinancial corporations use value-added output. Four-quarter changes are derived from published indexes and are descriptive, not causal. Do not average the measures into a composite score.
